Personalized Bowling

How do you get past the grief of losing your dog?

In addition to my Mastiff, I have a 13 year old Lab mix, Lady. I know that I have been fortunate to have her with me for this long, but the time is coming when I will have to put her down...she has arthritis and is losing the strength in her legs more and more everyday. While I can't stand to see her old and getting sicker, I can't stand the thought of not having her here in the house with me. Tonight after I put her to bed, I was staring at her personalized dog food bowl, her pretty leash, and glancing over at her empty dog bed and I burst into tears. I've been sick with the idea that soon she won't be here with me. I lost dogs as a child, but this is the first one I will have to put down on my own and it's killing me. I want her to go to heaven and be free of pain, but my question is how on earth I will get ever get over her death? She has been such a great friend and companion...she has made me smile daily. I have another dog, but he won't fill the void. Advice?

Just like losing any loved one, getting over her death will take time. I grew up with a cocker spaniel who we eventually had to put to sleep due to painful tumors that she had all over her tummy. We tried to keep her alive for awhile but there came a time when it was painful for her to even walk and we decided that keeping her alive any longer would be selfish. I still miss that dog, but now I can think back on my memories of her with joy. I know that she is in a better place and she is not in pain anymore. It will take some time for you to get over your sadness. You will probably always miss her, but you can always remember the happy times you had with her. Good luck!
